The Doctoral Programme in Philosophy is a four-year programme aimed at giving students thorough grounding in philosophy, particularly in the subject of their independent dissertation, while also developing research experience in the field. Current areas of expertise at Tampere University span the research of human reason (including knowledge, science, mind and language), social and political philosophy, metaphysics including social ontology, research ethics, and the history of philosophy from the early modern period through to twentieth century traditions. Dissertations are undertaken across a range of subfields, including philosophy of language, logic and artificial intelligence, metaphysics, social ontology, political and social philosophy, and the history of early modern and modern philosophy. Building national and international research networks is treated as an important component of the programme. The four-year programme starts in January 2027, with an application deadline of 30 October 2026. Graduates are equipped for work in research, teaching, public relations, publishing, and expert roles that require cross-disciplinary collaboration.
