University of Fukui

Doctoral Course: Advanced Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Molecular Engineering

Fukui, Japan Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Doctoral Course in Advanced Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Molecular Engineering track, is delivered at the University of Fukui, located on the western coast of central Japan and within reach of Kyoto and Osaka. Fukui operates under the guiding policy "KAKUCHI, the driving force for the future of people and society," spans three campuses (Bunkyo, Matsuoka, and Tsuruga), and hosts four schools: Education, Medical Sciences, Engineering, and Global and Community Studies. Around 5,000 students are enrolled, representing roughly half of the university-level student population in Fukui prefecture, out of about 11,000 university students prefecture-wide. This track is taught in English, runs for three years, and admits students in October or April. Molecular Engineering at the doctoral level generally examines the design, synthesis, and behavior of materials and molecules for engineering applications, spanning polymer science, nanomaterials, catalysis, and molecular-scale device design. Doctoral candidates carry out independent, supervised research culminating in a dissertation, frequently working across disciplinary lines with chemistry, physics, and materials science groups given the interdisciplinary framing of the wider program. Coursework and laboratory research build on a master's-level foundation in chemistry, materials science, or a related engineering field. Career paths for graduates include roles in materials and chemical industries, semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, pharmaceutical and biomaterials research, and academic or national-laboratory research positions. Because the program is taught in English, applicants are not required to demonstrate Japanese proficiency for coursework, although daily life in Fukui, a smaller city than Tokyo or Osaka, benefits from some familiarity with the language.
