Master in BioGeoSciences (MSc)

BioGeoSciences is a research-based MSc programme that draws on biology and geography to address the consequences of anthropogenic environmental change. Core topics include the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, conservation biology, aquatic ecology, landscape ecology, geoecology, and physical geography. Students develop scientific and methodological competences across all of these areas over four semesters. The programme is structured around seven mandatory modules totalling 48 ECTS and seven elective modules totalling 42 ECTS, allowing students to set their own priorities. Focal areas available as electives include terrestrial ecology, tropical ecology, regional development, and man and environment. A high proportion of practical classes — excursions, internships, field and laboratory work, and seminars — runs throughout the programme, and the volume of elective modules makes it straightforward to integrate a semester abroad. Students gain competences that qualify them for environmental research roles and for consulting positions at governmental and non-governmental organisations, national and international companies, and engineering offices. The programme also qualifies graduates to begin a PhD. Cooperation with the Federal Institute of Hydrology in Koblenz, universities in Rwanda and Madagascar, and various other German and international research institutions gives students opportunities to participate in applied and basic research projects. The programme is taught at the University of Koblenz in Koblenz, Germany.
