In the MALIS (Master of Advanced Studies in Library and Information Science) programme, students tackle the intellectual challenge of managing and curating digital information in libraries. The programme itself is part of the TH Köln's commitment to advancing library science and is supported by renowned faculty such as Prof. Dr. Claudia Frick and Prof. Dr. Richard Sieg, who bring expertise in natural language processing and large language models. The programme welcomes 30-40 students annually, including both full-time students and those taking individual modules, who benefit from the diverse backgrounds and expertise present in each cohort.

MALIS graduates go on to work in a variety of roles, including library management, information science research, and digital archiving. The programme also places a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning, with students often developing innovative projects and initiatives. For example, MALIS students have created an escape-room concept for the FH Münster, designed to teach library navigation in an interactive way, and contributed to a project on 'Diamond Open Access' in scientific libraries. The programme also prepares students for the digital transformation of the library sector, including managing digital assets and ensuring data security. Students are encouraged to engage with current research and professional bodies, including the Berufsverband Information Bibliothek (BIB).
