About the Program

Astrophysics at the University of Potsdam is a research-oriented Master of Science programme that covers the structure and evolution of the universe and its constituents. Core subject areas include stars and stellar evolution, galaxies, and cosmology, while more specialised topics span galaxy clusters and large-scale structures, interstellar and intergalactic gas, stellar winds, solar physics, cosmic magnetic fields, planetary science, astroparticle physics, gravitational waves, astronomical instrumentation and observation methods, and computer simulations. Students build both deep subject knowledge and a methodological toolkit for exploring and analysing these phenomena. The programme runs for 4 semesters and accepts students in both the Winter and Summer semester. It is conducted in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics (AIP), the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), and the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (AEI), providing students with exposure to active research environments. The programme is taught in English and is based at the University of Potsdam in Potsdam.
