Master in Arqus Joint Master's Programme in European Studies

Leipzig, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Arqus Joint Master's Programme in European Studies brings together four universities — the University of Granada, the University of Graz, Leipzig University, and Vilnius University — to provide a multidisciplinary understanding of Europe's place in the world. Drawing on the humanities and social sciences, the programme examines the relationship between Europeanisation and globalisation, the effects of global developments on the continent, and Europe's changing role in international affairs. European people, governments, companies, and civil society are treated as global actors, and students develop the research-based analytical skills to contribute to debates about Europe's future. Over 4 semesters starting in the winter semester, the curriculum is organised into twelve modules of 10 ECTS each. Modules alternate between jointly delivered hybrid courses — led by faculty from across the consortium and combining an online component with local instruction — and location-specific courses that reflect each partner university's regional expertise. Topics span An Introduction to European Studies, Europeanisation under the Global Condition, Europe and Law, European Foreign Policies, Regions in Europe, Social Transformations in Europe, Europe and Development, Global Challenges and European Answers, Cultural Representation in Current European Societies, electives, Europe as a global actor, and the Master's thesis. A third- or fourth-semester internship option connects students to the practical dimensions of their chosen research area. Students are strongly encouraged to pursue the physical mobility track and spend time at multiple partner universities. The programme is open to a broad international applicant pool. Students are selected through a process that weighs thematic fit and academic results (40%), motivation (15%), performance and language competencies at interview (30%), and extracurricular activities and additional languages (15%). Leipzig University serves as one of four study locations for the programme, based in Leipzig.
