Bachelor in Applied Biology (BSc)

Applied Biology is a six-semester Bachelor's programme with a strong emphasis on cell and molecular biology, human biology, genetics, microbiology, and modern analytical techniques. Laboratory training is delivered in small group settings and covers contemporary methodologies across these fields. During the first year, students take foundational courses in chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, cell biology, human biology, and microbiology. From the second year onward, the curriculum shifts toward molecular genetics, biochemistry, medical microbiology, and immunology. Mandatory language classes accompany the first year, with offerings including German, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, and Dutch. In the third year, students select elective courses and conduct research across various scientific disciplines. The programme runs for six semesters (180 ECTS) and begins each winter semester. Teaching typically starts in October, preceded by a two-week orientation period from mid-September that includes safety instructions, preparatory courses, and time to meet fellow students and teachers. A mobility window in the fifth and/or sixth semester allows students to spend one or two semesters at a partner university. Some partner universities offer dual degrees for students who take this option. The Bachelor's thesis involves a three-month placement in a research group or company, giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a research or development setting. This programme is taught at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg in Rheinbach, Germany.
