Students conduct ethnographic fieldwork by living in communities to study social practices, cultural expressions, and power structures through participant-observation. They analyze how local experiences connect to global processes like migration, environmental change, and economic systems. The programme emphasizes writing ethnographic research, engaging with theory, and producing original arguments based on primary sources. Students complete a year-long senior thesis involving independent research, public presentation, and oral examination.

Focus areas include medical anthropology, environmental anthropology, visual anthropology, anthropology of race and representation, anthropology of empire, anthropology of gender and masculinity.

The major requires 11 courses, including six departmental courses and a two-credit senior thesis seminar split across two semesters. The thesis involves original ethnographic or archival research and a public presentation.

Graduates pursue careers in research, public policy, non-profit organizations, education, and cultural institutions.

Students must complete ANTH H103, Introduction to Anthropology, preferably in their first or second year. Admission to the major requires advisor approval for all course selections.
