About the Program

Spanish and Ibero-American thought encompasses the philosophical, political, and intellectual traditions that have developed across Spain and Latin America from the early modern period to the present. Graduate study in this field examines major currents including scholasticism, liberalism, positivism, existentialism, and postcolonial thought, as well as the contribution of thinkers who shaped national and regional identities across the Iberian and Latin American worlds. Close reading of primary texts is combined with contextual historical and cultural analysis. This field prepares graduates for academic careers in philosophy, history of ideas, and Hispanic studies, as well as for roles in cultural institutions, publishing, and international cultural diplomacy.
