Polish Naval Academy

Master in Navigation

Gdynia, Poland Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Taught in English over three semesters, the Master's program in Navigation at the Polish Naval Academy is run through the Faculty of Navigation and Naval Weapons in Gdynia, the oldest faculty within the Academy. The faculty was established to educate officers for weapons systems operation and command of Polish Navy ships, and for fifteen years it has also extended this training to civilian students preparing for officer roles on commercial vessels and elsewhere in the maritime industry. Four units structure the faculty: the Institute of Navigation and Maritime Hydrography, the Institute of Naval Weapons and Computer Science, the Department of Ship's Operation, and the Department of Hydroacoustics. Education follows both the country's civilian and military regulations and the recommendations set out in international maritime conventions. The faculty's course offering covers navigation and computer science, with the option to continue at second-cycle level into a marine navigation specialty. Available facilities include a set of ship simulators, laboratories in radio navigation systems, electronic navigational charts, hydrometeorology, shipboard navigational aids, and ship manoeuvring and automated navigation systems, together with a planetarium. At the master's level, students typically deepen earlier navigation training with more advanced study of maritime traffic management, instrumentation, and command-level decision-making appropriate to more senior roles. Program graduates commonly move into senior deck officer positions, fleet or shore-based management roles, or continue toward research work connected to navigation and maritime hydrography, drawing on the combined simulator training and academic coursework that the Gdynia faculty provides across its three-semester structure.
