Master in Mining and engineering geology

Kraków, Poland Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Mining and Engineering Geology, with a specialization in Economic Geology, is a master's program at AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, taught in English over three semesters, equivalent to one and a half years including the writing of the master's thesis. Graduates gain broad knowledge of prospecting, documenting, and evaluating mineral deposits, and are able to plan and carry out an exploration program depending on the genetic type of deposit and the elements being searched for, while also controlling the excavation process of an ore horizon. The program builds the ability to choose optimal field and laboratory assay methods for both prospecting and documentation reports, and students take part in obligatory field works and diploma field works, with past cohorts completing diploma field work in Poland, Ukraine, Kosovo, Slovakia, Australia, Laos, and Mongolia. Economic Geology graduates learn to evaluate collected samples under the microscope, choose samples for further chemical assay and evaluate the results, describe drill core through logging, and evaluate mineral deposits, including calculating resources and reserves based on three- and four-dimensional deposit models. The program also builds skills in using current software to present data as maps, diagrams, and profiles, controlling validation of extracted mineral commodities, and cooperating with miners on geological service, along with familiarity with software for mineral deposit modelling. Graduates are prepared for roles in mineral exploration, deposit evaluation, and geological services within mining companies, research institutions, and government geological authorities, drawing on the field-based and laboratory training built into the three-semester program.
