Master in Marine Biology

Bremen, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The MSc in Marine Biology at the University of Bremen is strongly research-oriented. Students are trained to develop hypothesis-driven research concepts and design experimental approaches to address questions about marine ecosystem functioning, organism biology, and the impacts of local, regional, and global environmental change. Teaching draws on the University of Bremen's close ties with several major marine research institutions in the state of Bremen. Faculty from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), and the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI) contribute to the programme. Many courses are taught in the laboratories and facilities of these institutes, providing direct access to research infrastructure and active researchers. The programme spans four semesters, starting in the winter semester, in a modular structure combining theoretical and practical courses. Applications must include a CV, a letter of motivation in English, a transcript of BSc studies with grades and ECTS, proof of English skills, and documents of relevant qualifications. Selection is based on the overall grade of the previous degree (40%), individual academic and non-academic qualifications relevant to marine biology (40%), and the letter of motivation (20%). The programme is at the University of Bremen in Bremen, Germany.
