Master in MA English Studies

The MA in English Studies at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg is a research-oriented programme offering advanced study of the English language alongside the literatures and cultures of Great Britain, Ireland, and other English-speaking countries. The programme is modularised and encourages students to concentrate in one of two broad areas: Culture and Literature, or Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The Culture and Literature path draws on the history of ideas and discourse analysis, with courses covering cultural history, popular culture, processes of cultural and medial translation, and literary texts from the Renaissance to the present, including their intersections with philosophy and religion. An optional Wild Card module allows students to arrange an internship in a related area. The Linguistics and Applied Linguistics path examines the English language through current theoretical frameworks, covering construction grammar, corpus linguistics, first and second language acquisition, language history and variation, and topics in foreign language teaching including lexicography, bilingualism, and speech perception. Students may also follow a combined path that draws equally on both fields. All three paths include advanced English language courses, opportunities to draw on related disciplines such as North American Studies or Romance languages, and the option to study abroad at European partner universities. Instruction is entirely in English. The programme runs over four semesters and is based at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg in Erlangen, Germany.
