PhD in International Doctoral Programme – Environment Water (ENWAT)

The ENWAT doctoral programme at the University of Stuttgart is an international PhD programme in the field of Environment Water, facilitated by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Sciences Department. It currently hosts around 50 doctoral candidates across five participating institutions within the faculty. The specific research subject depends on the supervising institute, and a wide range of topics within environment and water is covered. The programme is structured in two phases. The first phase, lasting one to two years, combines coursework, preparation of the research topic, and mandatory participation in a biannual doctoral seminar where research progress is discussed with all ENWAT doctoral researchers and supervisors. This phase concludes with a qualifying exam. The second phase, lasting approximately two years, is primarily dedicated to research, continued seminar participation, and concludes with the doctoral defence. Students are expected to recruit a co-adviser and prepare a research proposal and framework early in the programme. International students without prior German are required to attend intensive German language courses before the programme begins. The programme is based at the University of Stuttgart in Stuttgart.
