Bachelor in Engineering in Biotechnology

Warszawa, Poland Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Engineering in Biotechnology is a bachelor's degree at Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW) in Warszawa, taught in English over 3.5 years, or seven semesters. Biotechnology is described here as a multidisciplinary field combining life sciences and engineering, with the aim of using living organisms in the development, testing, and manufacture of products. Beyond the general curriculum, students can specialize in plant, animal, or microorganism biotechnology, gaining both practical and theoretical grounding in each area. The programme is built to prepare graduates for careers in the food and pharmaceutical industries, diagnostics, plant breeding companies, and research institutions, among other sectors, with particular attention to bioinformatics, genomics, nanobiotechnology, and genetic engineering. The first year covers general and physical chemistry, botany, animal anatomy, mathematics, physics and biophysics, information technologies, organic chemistry, cell biology, animal histology, ecology, and design thinking. The second year moves into general genetics, biochemistry, general microbiology, plant physiology, animal physiology, physiology of microorganisms, engineering of biotechnological processes, molecular biology, the basics of genetics and animal breeding, and enzymology and biochemical techniques, along with general virology. By graduation, students are expected to be able to plan and carry out biotechnological experiments and processes, generate and interpret biological data to a high standard, and judge which methods and equipment suit a given problem. As a discipline, biotechnology sits at the boundary of biology, chemistry, and engineering, and its graduates are sought after wherever living systems are engineered into products, from food and medicine to environmental cleanup and industrial manufacturing.
