About the Program

The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland offers this Master's program in Composition and Musical Theory, taught in English over two years, with yearly tuition of EUR 5500. Founded in 1929, the Academy is housed in a neo-Gothic building and holds concerts, master classes, workshops, competitions, and conferences at national and international levels alongside its teaching program. Since the 2011/2012 academic year, the Academy has offered paid studies in selected specialties taught in English. Faculty members include pianists Prof. Andrzej Jasiński, Józef Stompel, and Wojciech Świtała, harpist Prof. Helga Storck, guitarist Prof. Alina Gruszka, organist Prof. Julian Gembalski, harpsichordist Prof. Marek Toporowski, accordionist Prof. Joachim Pichura, and cellist Prof. Paweł Głombik, alongside musicians from the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. At the Master's level, composition and musical theory study builds on undergraduate training, deepening students' command of harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, and analysis while giving them more independence in developing their own compositional voice. Graduates typically continue into professional composition, teaching, doctoral study, or roles supporting performance and arts organizations, drawing on both the creative and scholarly sides of the discipline.
