About the Program

Archeology is a master's degree program at the University of Warsaw, delivered in Warszawa, Poland, over two years and taught in English, with yearly tuition of 2000 EUR. The program offers in-depth training in the excavation of human and animal remains, along with courses in osteology, bone taphonomy, and archaeological chemistry. Lecturers bring fieldwork experience from various parts of the Near East, and specialized lectures and classes are set alongside a general curriculum covering the archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. Graduates of the program are described as becoming professional excavators of cemeteries and animal bone deposits, trained in osteology to a level sufficient for macroscopic fieldwork analysis of human remains, including assessment of sex and age, basic paleopathology, stress markers, metric measurements, and basic odontology. They are also expected to be able to place the results of bioarchaeological research within a wider historical and ecological context and to design more specific laboratory research projects. Further information is available through the Institute of Archaeology. Archaeology as a discipline studies past human societies through the excavation and analysis of physical remains, including artifacts, structures, and human and animal bones. Graduates of archaeology programs often go on to work in excavation projects, museums, heritage and conservation bodies, laboratories, and academic research, or continue toward doctoral study. Admission is based on a qualifying interview conducted in English, which assesses a candidate's ability to study archaeology and their scope of interest within the field. Candidates who are not graduates of first-cycle archaeology programs may be required to pass exams in selected subjects from the first-cycle curriculum to address any gaps. Further admission information is available at www.irk.uw.edu.pl.
