The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) offers a distinctive Arctic learning experience based in Longyearbyen, where the environment itself becomes a classroom. Established to provide field-based teaching and high-quality research in Arctic Biology, Geology, Geophysics and Technology, UNIS leverages its unique polar location to enable hands-on data collection, observations and collaborative projects with Norwegian and international research partners.
UNIS does not award full bachelor, master or PhD degrees; instead it provides intensive courses that earn ECTS credits which students can transfer to their home institutions. Course work emphasizes practical skills, safety in extreme environments, and experience-driven learning that prepares students for careers in polar research, environmental monitoring, and related fields. Small class sizes and active research programs create close mentoring relationships with faculty.
International students benefit from a tight-knit community, frequent field excursions and access to specialized laboratory facilities. UNIS recommends that students arrange credit approval with their home university in advance and offers guidance on logistics and field safety. For learners seeking immersive, applied training in Arctic science, UNIS provides an unmatched platform to gain real-world research experience and professional connections.
